Newman’s Winning History at Michigan Could Play To His Advantage

08.17.2013

Ryan Newman has his work cut out for him at Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 now that he is in position to hold the second wild-card spot in the Chase for the 2013 Sprint Cup.

Elevated into the standing after his 14th-place finish at Watkins Glen International last week, Newman’s position cannot be taken lightly. Only the top 10 in point standings are guaranteed a spot in the 10-race, 12-driver Chase. Spots 11 and 12 are doled out to the two drivers between 11th and 20th in points who also have the most wins.

With four more races to go before the Chase for the Cup begins, this Sunday’s showdown at Michigan International Speedway will be high pressure for the No. 39 Chevrolet driver. One thing definitely leaning in Newman’s favor, however, is his history at the intermediate track. To date, he has garnered two wins at Michigan, one in 2003 and one in 2004. He’s also had five top-five finishes and seven top-10s there since his Sprint Cup career started in 2001. Plus, the similarities between the tracks in Michigan, Pocono and Indianapolis aren’t lost on Newman and his crew. Together, they’ve had a fair amount of luck at the larger speedways lately, undoubtedly making Newman a top driver to watch this Sunday.

If our State Racing guy can bring in another win or even a top-five finish at Michigan, it would go a long way toward securing his spot in the Chase. So, break a leg, Ryan.  Here at State, we’re wishing you a Solid State finish!
