Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Install/Great for Basements installed in a basement that gets very humid in the Summer. Perfect for my basement due to the dehumidifying top.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps the garage cool Bought and installed in the last month. One cool outcome is that it puts out cool air during it's operation so it actually helps to cool down the area where it is installed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good. it's summer time and not as much heat in the basement so it seems the hot water does not last as long as when we got it and were using the furnace in the basement. That was in the spring, we'll see more when we get to winter, but so far it seems efficient and provided some electricity savings.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I have had 3 tanks, first two were faulty, my current on does not recover quickly enough to get 2 showers out of it. Seems to continually run?? Maybe this one is bad too ?????

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice water heater - until it dies I'm a big fan of heat pumps tech and green building. However, this water heater only worked well for 26 months. Then the compressor died - emitting an ECO code. Still worked as an electric water heater. My plumber replaced the tank under warranty but I had to pay the $400+ installation fee. That negated any energy savings I got from this tank.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Failed within 1 year Bought this in a newly constructed house. Thought it was good technology to conserve energy. Worked great for ten (10) months, then the heat pump compressor failed - no hot water unless on the heat coil, which uses a ton of electricity. State replaced the entire water heater, but only offered me $200 for the labor. I didn’t have to pay - new house had warranty from builder - but he got stuck with the cost. Fingers crossed, I’m not replacing the new one a year from now.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No hot water twice a month We bought this 14 months ago. Worked fine for a year. Now the compressor stops working about every two weeks. We had our plumber out who called warranty. They said as long as it comes back on after power cycling it’s fine. You just have to flip the breaker, wait 19 sec and it come back for another two weeks. Apparently compressed not working a couple times a month is A-OK. I’m very disappointed after paying a premium.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worked great for 6 years My state heat pump water heater worked great for 6 years and now the tank is leaking. It has a 10 year warranty but can’t find anyone to warranty it. A/o smith bought out state heaters but they won’t do anything

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed after 13 months. Only lasted 13 months before the compressor failed, requiring a replacement of the entire unit. Troubleshooting was a huge pain because there was no error message, just a huge spike in energy usage and zero hot water ever if we tried to use the heat pump. Manufacturer offered no help until the unit finally started providing an error message months later, and we still ended up paying a huge amount in labor to replace a clearly defective unit. I absolutely would not recommend a State water heater of any sort after this experience.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Heat pump leaking freon on all 4 water heaters. I'm on my 4th water heater in 5 years and yes, they have been installed by 2 different licensed plumbers, its not the plumber its the manufacturing of the heat pump (small pin holes leaking freon) that's what the sales rep said when he came over to my house with my contractor to see what was going on and said he would get back to me, which he didn't. Even the the sales guy at the plumbing store (not a box store) said he wouldn't sell these water heaters to his worst enemy, he said hey been having issues with them and they have a whole yard full of junk STATE heaters in the back.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Had to replace after 18 months It was great for 18 months on heat pump mode only and then the evaporator coil broke and it's built so that it can't be repaired. I have to replace the whole thing. Huge hassle. Labor warranty only lasts 12 months. I'd steer clear of this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Disappointed!!! Wouldn't buy again. We had this Hybrid Electric Heat Pump Water Heater installed on 6/4/2024 as it was one listed on Efficiency Vermont's website. We ran it in Hybrid mode until 8/9/2024 when Error Code 025 was displayed which indicated the Heat Pump Coil Temperature Sensor needed to be replaced. We've been informed that there are no Certified Service Technicians within 90 miles of us so the warranty will cover just $100 toward labor but the part should be covered if it was a manufacturing error. We have been told that the part is being manufactured but there is no time estimate provided of when it would be shipped to us. We have been unable to find a technical drawing of where the part is located within the unit but were told that the plumbing connections may need to be removed in order to access it. If that is the case, it will be an expensive repair if done by a plumber with only $100 reimbursed to us. Before purchasing this water heater, it is important to check with State to make sure that there is an certified service provider in your area, as our distributor didn't even know that there wasn't an certified service provider in our area. Since 8/9/2024 we have been using the electric mode of the water heater so we have hot water until the part is received and then installed. Unfortunately, even this is inconvenient because the electric mode requires an input of number of days you want to use the mode and the limit is 7 days. If the electric mode is not reset then it automatically switches to hybrid mode which won't work because of the Error Code, therefore no hot water.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Works great but 3 leaking tanks in 17 months!! Avoid these!!! I’m a contractor and used to sell them to my customers. On 12/22 I bought 2 for my own home. On 9/23 I get an alert about water on the floor in the middle of the night, tank developed a pin hole leak. Replaced defective tank on 9/23 and on 5/24 the replacement tank has a pinhole leak in a different location. Today I replaced the replacement tank and the new (3rd) tank was leaking from the bottom cold inlet that’s capped off. Removed cap to find no pipe dope on threads. Drained tank, applied pipe dope to thread and so far no leak but I have lost faith in State and WILL NEVER recommend these to my customers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Questionable reliability Bought this new technology to conserve energy versus a perfectly functional oil-fired hot water heater. Worked great for 11.5 months, then the heat pump only functioned intermittently allowing us to run short on hot water. State replaced the entire hopt water heater, but only offered me $200 for the labor, even though I reported the problems and shortage of hot water to the plumber by email within the 1 year labor warranty. State insists that the labor warranty isn't valid unless you report the issues directly to the manufacturer within the time frame of the warranty. Seems like a catch 22 to me, the unit never threw a malfunction code, even though the heat pump exhaust air was warmer (not cold as it should be) than the ambient temperature. The replacement unit is working well, only time will tell about it's long-term reliability.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Compressor stopped working after 15 months The unit was loud but worked as it should for just over a year. When the compressor died, the unit code for that flashed, then it beeps. For months while trying to get a plumber to service the unit, I daily or several times daily, cycled the power off for the unit to stop it's beeping. I finally gave up and called state customer service, who over the phone diagnosed the failure and agreed to a warranty. replacement. When it turned out there were no local dealers, State paid about 3/4 of the purchase price as a warranty "buyout." I won't be buying a State replacement.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not reliable I purchased and 80 gal State hybrid heat pump water heater 7 years ago. I am now on my third unit after two compressor failures. State has replaced the units however I have spent $1000 in labor chargers to replace them. My plumber tells me he has replace several other of these units for the same failure.
