Quiet an plenty of HOT water
My last unit was a State, installed by our builder 15 1/2 years ago. Always hot water and never a problem. Replaced with an upgraded State, confident we will receive many years of great service.

Great Quality and Quickly Heats
I just had it installed early this morning but it is already heating and it looks great. Hearty construction! Much better than the tank I had them replace. One thing I would change is the venting. I kind of liked the solid wall of my last unit verses the "expandable flex tube" look. Other than that I love it. It was expensive. I guess I will see how it lasts. My last one was from 1998 and I did great maintenance but it was not this brand.

Reliable, performs great!
We got this water heater when we purchased our brand new home three years ago. The water is always nice and hot, regardless if it is summer or winter. We had a State heater at our previous home, but it would not heat the water as high as we would like in the summer, for some reason. Even when we turned the thermostat up during the summer! So weird! We were told that State heaters were the best. The GS6-50-YBDS we now have has restored our confidence in State products.

Tank lasted 17 years.
The original tank lasted 17 years. Replaced with the exact same one. In fact I purchased it 5 years ago but didn't need it until now. I installed the original but decided to have a plumber install the new one. Plumber didn't know how to do a Direct vent so I did the vent work after he plumbed it.

For Direct Vent this was a charm
This was a little tough to install, but the flexible venting ducts that State provided were nice to see since they are flexible and will give you some leeway during install. Very well written manual that if followed properly will result in an excellent installation. I suppose the big black venting pipe on the side helps deliver a good efficient heating process to deliver hot water experience. But be ready to deal with that Big Black venting pipe on the back/side of the unit... It adds at least 2 inches to your equation. If you are getting Direct Vent Hot Water heater get one made by State, since the venting pipe is flexible and allows you to have an easier install.

Big improvement over 21 year old unit
Old Penfield started leaking so I needed a replacement right away. I found this one without too much effort. Ran into a bit of an obstacle with the distributor giving me the runaround with the tankless pitch and “this unit is no longer made”, but after leaving, a quick web search found this unit at the same distributor at a different location. Frustrated I had to travel 15 miles to a different location to get it, but that’s not a reflection on the manufacturer. A bit of sticker shock since buying my last water heater 20 years ago for my last house, but as an emergency replacement, it’s not like I had much of a choice.
Installation fairly straightforward, but found the direct vent style has changed in that an intake duct now runs along the outside of the heater from the top to bottom, along with a larger diameter tank. These appear to be nice upgrades, but they come at the cost of space. If replacing with an old unit, be sure to have plenty of clearance (2-3” for intake duct, 2” more in diameter over 1998 Penfield). I could see this being a nightmare for someone with a small pad or tight fitting closet. On the positive side, the height was only slightly taller than the original heater and didn’t affect the wall mounting. The vent outlet is of good quality, better and more attractive than original.
Startup was also straightforward, sure wish there was a way to reduce the number of button presses to light the pilot. The water came up to temperature quickly and to no surprise, water flowing to the faucet warms up noticeably faster than original heater. It’s only been installed a week and while I don’t have data, it definitely seems like it is burning less gas than the original.
I rated it a 4 in value really only due to purchase price. Here’s hoping the savings in energy offset the purchase price quickly.

Great Product
After 16 years our State 40 gallon water heater still worked but was showing some signs of aging. We replaced it with another State 40 gallon water heater. It has some new, improved features which should produce even more efficient results. State makes a great product.

Excellent fit for an older State Unit
After 23 years our original equipment (by builder) direct vent State 40 gals unit failed. I have no complaint as that's almost 5 times the original warranty period of 5 years! The replacement GS6-40-YBDS unit, of the same capacity, worked with the existing direct vent opening through our home's siding. Sure saved me a lot of siding patch work! Great that after 23 years State still has a unit that matches the dimensions of a unit installed in '96 (actually manufactured in '94).
